Students should be provided with garbage collection bags as well as gloves for this exercise. Suspicious items, which may pose health hazards, should be left in place and local authorities or water protection agencies (i.e., Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission) should be notified.
The WATERWAY GARBOLOGY WORKSHEET should be used in conjunction with the WATERWAY GARBOLOGY CHECKLIST to analyze garbage items.
- Wear gloves and closed-toe shoes.
- Be careful with sharp objects and syringes.
- Hazardous items should be left on the ground, and an environmental or health official should be notified.
- Do not touch dead animals.
